Work Hours Calculator

Each period is finish minus start, then minus the break. If the finish clock is earlier than the start, the shift is treated as ending the next morning. The total is shown in hours:minutes and decimal hours.

Calculator

How the number is produced

Worked minutes = (finish − start, plus 24 hours if the finish is on the next morning) − break. Decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60.

Worked example

09:00 to 12:30 with no break is 3 hours 30 minutes. 13:15 to 17:30 with no break is 4 hours 15 minutes. Together that is 7 hours 45 minutes, or 7.75 decimal hours.

When this is useful

A timesheet asks for decimal hours and you only have clock times, or a night shift crosses midnight.

Limits

Breaks are treated as unpaid. It does not apply overtime rules. It does not know the time zone of the clock you type.

More on the assumptions is on how the calculators work.

Questions

What if I finish after midnight?

Type the finish as the morning time, for example 22:00 to 06:00. The calculator adds a day.
